How to Buy a Car or an RV in Another State

Trading Car for Money

Oregon and Idaho drivers often ask us at ClickIt Auto and RV Wandermere, “Can I buy a car out of state?” You can! That being said, car shoppers often have anxieties about the registration process, taxes, fees, and more when they’re considering buying an RV or buying a car in another state. There’s no reason to worry, however. Take advantage of the great offers here at ClickIt Auto and RV Wandermere, whether or not you’re a Washingtonian, and follow our handy guide on how to buy a car in another state.

How to Register a Car Purchased Out of State

When you drive home a used car for sale in Washington, one of the first questions you’ll have is how to register it in your home state. Fortunately, transferring your license plate to a vehicle you bought over state lines is easy; it’ll require some documentation and a visit to the DMV. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  1. After you’ve purchased the car, request a bill of sale that clearly shows how much you paid. Then, find your local DMV. Not sure where to go? Use DMV Near Me.
  2. Gather the documentation you’ll need, including your bill of sale, photo ID, proof of address, and proof of insurance. When you arrive at the DMV, inform the clerk that you bought the car out of state and wish to title and register it to your address in your home state.
  3. You’ll probably get the bill of sale back, but the clerk will keep your Washington title and ask for the difference in sales tax between Washington and your home state.
  4. Once the difference is paid, your new title will be put in the mail.

Taxes & Fees on Out-of-State Cars

If you’re concerned about additional fees, there’s no need to worry! The difference between Washington tax and your home state’s tax will be the only fee you’ll need to pay beyond the price of your car or RV. The only downside is, you probably won’t spend any less time waiting at the DMV to complete the process.

How to Register an RV Purchased Out of State

You’ll follow the same process outlined above if you’re registering an RV that you purchased out of state, rather than a car. However, one step many RV shoppers take to avoid paying the difference in taxes is to arrange a delivery to their home.

Certain states, such as Indiana, don’t allow for delivery. If your state does, however, it’s worth considering, because it’ll save you the hassle of paying taxes twice in two separate states. Once the RV arrives, you can title it and pay taxes in your home state.
